My Vampire

Chapter 15: Coming out

Coming Out

The case is now closed. The rest is just a personal matter. Hmmm…

Should I tell her who I am? … Rick always told them about himself. But he never turned any of them, he always sent them off. He loved seeing humans live their life to the fullest, not taking away their freedom to die. Rick is also a pureblood. I could’ve made him my dependent… But we’ve known each other for a long time. I think it’d be best, to be honest with Yuki; she may fear me, but she’ll have figured it out eventually. If that’s the case, I’ll tell her. If she fears and hates me, I can erase her memory and go to a different place. That’s all there is to it.

I made up my mind to do so and went home. When I arrived, and was about to enter the apartment, I heard a voice.

“You’re late! I got here before you.”

And she gives me that amazing smile.

Ah. I still love that smile on Yuki’s face.

“I’m sorry. I was out checking on a patient that came in earlier today.”

“Ah! I heard about that. I was surprised to hear it from the emergency room doctor.”

“Well, what the heck… why don’t you come in, anyway?”

“Right."

We rode the elevator and entered the room in silence. We sat on the sofa in the living room, faced each other, and I started talking.

“Yuki, I’m sorry about the other day. I apologize if I made you feel bad. But… if…”

I spoke while looking down. And then Yuki stands up and goes behind me, taking me into her arms?!

“I feel the same way, Marc. I like you.”

She spoke into my ear. What should I do? I’m sure my ears will be bright red.

“Oh my god, your ears are red. It’s not fair when you got to be so bold with me.”

“You disturb and annoy me so easily. You’re the only person who has ever made me feel this way.”

Yuki pushes me back on the sofa, looks down at me, and says, “I've realized how I feel since then. I realized that I like you.”

“I’m glad. Yuki. I don’t want to hide anything from you. I have something important to tell you. Will you hear me out?”

Yuki sits down beside me, turning to face me.

“Yuki, I’m not human. I’m what is called a vampire.”

“... I’m sorry. What did you just say?”

“I'm a vampire. That's what I said."

After a few moments of silence, Yuki said with her head in her hands,

“Wait a minute… I can’t catch up with my own thoughts. That word you just said, vampire, as in you know? Vampire?”

“Who else is there? There's no such thing as a vampire who isn't a vampire."

I smile and look at Yuki.

“... so then, do you have fangs?”

“That’s the first question you want to ask me?”

I’m not sure if it’s a question that came naturally to her, or if it’s just because she’s a doctor.

“Do you want to see it?"

I ask her in turn. What do you think?

“I want to see it!"

She says, her eyes sparkling like a child’s. I think she’s a little bit like him… Nobunaga used to look at the glassworks from the West with glittering eyes. I remember when he looked at the embroidery on my cloak, sighing in delight as he said, “What an unusual pattern!”

Well, at that time, I gave him some clothes; as I recall, it was because he looked at them so much.

“Look, here they are. They stretch a little when I suck blood.”

I show her my fangs.

“Wow! They really do have fangs. That's interesting. But you eat normal meals, too, right? What does that mean? Can you eat normal food?"

“It's not just that we need blood. Over the course of our long history with humans, we've learned to eat everything. We just need to take blood regularly, because our bodies need it. When depleted, we get terrible bloodthirsty urges and attack without regard. So I do take blood regularly."
