Paragon of Death

Chapter 28

Chapter 28: Chapter 27: Dysfunctional team

A week had passed after the team selection process and it was time for the first task. While other teams moved together, that of Damon all arrived at the hall separately. They came at different times and sat at different locations. Not even bothering to shoot each other a glance.

The blood mage, Klien has never even met any of his team members since the selection was over and he didn’t bother to attempt either. His nonchalant attitude helped make life easier for the three.

“So we have twenty teams this session, quite much but I guess that is to be expected. There are a lot of talents here after all. Each team has picked a name except for one... Damon, Klien, Gin, and Cyrus” Professor Alonso called out with a slight frown.

Four of them lazily stood up, each of them moving lazily. The expressions on their faces made it clear that the professor was disturbing their peace.

“Why do you not have a name registered?” Professor Alonso asked with a raised eyebrow.

“Because we are not a team.... You all just put together four murderers in one team and expect it to work? What the hell even our Oracle is a part of the war mage class... how are we supposed to function?” Gin laughed as he spoke.

Hearing this, the professor frowned. He too was aware of what happened but he couldn’t guess why the academy would create such an unusual team. The lacking roles in the team could cost their lives in a mission.

.....

“Your team in is already disadvantaged do I suggest you train and act properly if you want to have a chance of survival” Professor Alonso said.

Hmph!

“We can’t die, we are a team of chosens. Do you think just anyone can kill us easily?” Klien seemed enraged by the professor’s words.

“Speak for yourself! No one is truly invincible, so don’t drag us into your crazy world or we may end up having a large target on our back” Cyrus said to Klien with a frown.

“What did you just say to me?” Klien’s eyes were blood-red as he gazed into Cyrus’s soul.

“Shut up, both of you” Damon said with a frown.

“Yay! A fight! Can I join?” Gin laughed with a broad smile on his face while he clapped

“How dare you make silly jokes in my class!” Professor Alonso growled.

“Just shut the fuck up!” Gin, Klien, Cyrus, and Damon said at the same time while shooting the professor a stern look!

....

“And that’s how we got ourselves a suicide mission” Damon explained with an indifferent look on his face.

Archmage Kratos frowned after listening to the story. Honestly, this is the first time he has heard something this amusing and crazy happening in the magic Academy. He didn’t blame the kids though, since he was the one who put them in such a dysfunctional team. The stress probably made them act that way.

He shot Gin and the others a glance and what he saw were amused faces. It was clear, they found the entire situation funny.

“This is not funny. While other students are out there killing goblins, you are sent to wipe out a team of orc scouts. While scouts are naturally useless and most times lack any real fighting skills, they are still orcs. The average orc is as strong as two men put together at the very least. Scouts may not have magic but they do have weapons and at least an average level of fighting skills. Do I need to remind you that orcs are the most powerful of all time? Warmongers .. trained from birth to fight wars. So the average or below average amongst them is probably very skilled. I would have you all write an apology letter to Professor Alonso and we will have your mission changed” Archmage Kratos said with a stern look.

Pfft!

Hahahahahahahahahaha!

Without knowing it, Gin was already laughing hard while Cyrus and Klien who was more gentle and refined wore smiles on their faces, leaving the archmage confused.

“I would rather Storm the royal palace alone than apologize” Gin laughed while he laughed.

“He has a point though. I don’t mind fighting you now if it means I don’t have to apologize” Damon said to the archmage with a slight smile on his face.

Klien and Cyrus nodded too in agreement with their words.

“We are not here to get the mission changed. We came here to get it approved. Ok nice, that’s done, we will be on our way” Damon said quickly to clear the confusion visible in the eyes of the old man.

“Do you know what you are trying to go against?” Kratos asked with a frown.

“Yep, two green men with weapons made out of bone or rusty swords... nothing much” Damon said while shrugging his shoulders.

“We are probably the strongest members of the chosens. We are aware of what each of us is capable of.... To approve this and let us get this over with” Damon shook his head while he spoke, making Kratos frown even deeper.

First of all, hosts never get along, especially the guardian spirit host of life and death. Damon and Cyrus didn’t seem to be on each other’s throats. Neither were Cyrus and Klien.

‘Was I wrong?’ The Archmage couldn’t help but ask himself.

As for Him who is suspected to be a potential candidate as the host of the guardian spirit of force, no one could pinpoint anything wrong with him.

Just like any other member of his family, he had enormous mana reserves. Maybe even higher but not high enough to be a host! What these people failed to realize is hosts are chosen even before birth and their bodies are enhanced to be at peak condition from the start.

Meanwhile, this set of hosts who were selected years after their birth can not be improved so quickly. Their body keeps undergoing changes but it is gradual! This is something no one expected, and this is the only reason Damon and the rest are still alive till now!
