Speed Is King

Chapter 8

“Time to bring in the heavy. It’ll be fine. My beast summons can handle it.” Elliot murmured, trying to convince himself that he was ready.

“Are you guys ready?”

He looked at his 11 wolves and 3 hawks which were positioned all around him. They howled and screeched their eagerness to start the hunt.

Elliot nodded in satisfaction.

He had spent the previous hour taming and releasing all sorts of animals, and was able to push his level to level 10, thereby gaining 20 points and assigning them to his skills and gaining an additional 2 wolves and 2 hawks each.

Ellie and Rex were also nearby.

Although Elliot forbade them to participate in the upcoming Large Beast hunt that Elliot would initiate with his [Large Beast Lure], they were allowed to watch.

“Here we go! Hawk, activate the [Large Beast Lure]!”

[Activating [Large Beast Lure]. Large beast enroute. Good luck.]

They all waited in silence for a few seconds.

“If the [Large Beast Lure] brings in a large 5000 kilogram carnivore, I’m so dead. I should be able to handle carnivores up to 2000 kilograms though. Herbivores are all doable. So technically I can handle 70% of all the beasts that the [Large Beast Lure] can bring in. I should be fine’¦”

BOOM! GRAAAHHHHHHH!!!!

“Damn it! That’s a carnivore!”

BOOM! BOOM!

“”Grilled poo on a freaking long stick! It sounds HUGE!! DAMN IT! Why is my luck so rotten! Damn you! DAMN YOU!!!” Elliot cursed his luck angrily.

B O O O O M ! !

GRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

The wolves whimpered lightly. In his mind, Elliot could feel their fear. There was no way they would attack such a ridiculously powerful beast. The 3 hawks simply flew off to a larger tree further away and looked at the giant bear coldly. The fact that they had abandoned their master bothered them not in the slightest. Elliot knew that they too would not attack.

“I am so screwed.” Elliot despaired as he stared at the giant black bear which was sniffing the air and looking around. “The apocalypse hasn’t even started and I am already about to die’¦”

“Gramps?” Ellie suddenly leapt forward and barked at the giant black bear like a dog.

“Huh? Ellie you’¦ you know this giant black bear?!” Elliot couldn’t believe his luck, the very same luck he just cursed to hell and back.

The giant black bear looked down at the comparatively tiny Ellie and slowly lowered its massive head towards her. At that point, Ellie was merely the size of the giant black bear’s nose!

Ellie wobbled unstably on her legs as the giant black bear sniffed at her. To Ellie, that little sniff was as powerful as a gust of wind during a thunderstorm.

The giant black bear probably recognized Ellie because he suddenly laid down on the ground and grunted affectionately at Ellie. He totally ignored Elliot, the wolves, the hawks and Rex, totally considering them as a no-factor.

He was probably right.

Ellie began to bark and roar excitedly as she pranced around the giant black bear like a little horse.

“Gramps! Where you go? Huhuhu’¦ I look look look for you, you no have. Lucky wolf brother find me-“

At that, the giant black bear lifted his head to glare at the wolves. They shrank back in fear and began to whimper even louder.

“AND bring Ellie here to Master! Wolf brother good! Wolf brother good!” Ellie quickly said.

However, at the mention of the word “Master”, the giant black bear seemed to get even angrier!

GRAAHHH!!!! It glared at Elliot and roared! Spittle and a powerful gust of smelly breath smashed into him and sent him sprawling to the ground.

“Gramps no! Master good! No do that! NO!” Ellie bit on the giant black bear’s paw and pulled at its fur. To absolutely no physical effect, of course.

The giant black bear stood up and growled at Elliot menacingly.

“GRAMPS! Naughty gramps! Go naughty corner! Go! GO!” Ellie barked cutely.

Both the giant black bear and Elliot turned to look at Ellie with strange looks on their faces.

A giant, two thousand kilogram black bear, presumably the reigning King of the Californian forests, sent to naughty corner??

Her little outburst seemed to work, however, as the giant black bear stopped growling at Elliot.

“I mean her no harm.” Elliot lifted both his hands, palms facing out. “My wolves found her weak and fatigued. I signed a contract with her so that I could better take care of her.” Elliot lied smoothly.

The giant black bear merely snorted.

“Anyway, she’s my tamed beast now, and I promise that I will take care of her as though she is my little sister. In fact, I have two little sisters, so I know how to take care of people. They are both really happy and healthy!” Elliot rambled on. Every second the giant black bear was listening to his words, was another second that it wasn’t attacking him.

Elliot counted each word that left his mouth as a victory, so he kept talking.

However, his three hawks suddenly screeched loudly and took to the skies.

“Huh? That’s strange. They wouldn’t do that unless there’s an imminent danger. What on earth would dare to attack us with a giant black bear right here? Unless it’s an extra large’¦”

GRAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!

The giant black bear stood up suddenly and roared!

“Ellie! Rex! Come here!” Elliot quickly called his two little tamed beasts over and hid them within him. “Wolves, to me!”

Elliot got his wolves to circle around him and prepared to deal with an attack. “Hawks, prepare to dive attack the incoming beast. Aim for its eyes!” However, he doubted that his wolves and hawks would be able to do much.

They were like strong toddlers in an adult’s fight.
