The Black Beast's Useless Concubine

Chapter 26

Breaking Off The Engagement (2)

Bai Ye was not an easy target. As Yun Mengmeng closed in, Bai Ye was already ready to counterattack.

However, before Bai Ye could make a move, Mu Yunzhan stepped in to intercept the blow. He pushed Yun Mengmeng aside—a loud crash was heard as she tumbled across the floor.

If Bai Ye was the first to strike, Yun Mengmeng would have lost an arm. She squinted her eyes at the collapsed body, curious. Mu Yunzhan’s counter was gentlemanly so it was odd that Yun Mengmeng laid sprawled on the floor.

Trouble was in the air.

“Sister!”

“Mengmeng…”

Concerned voices were slowly descending upon the girl on the floor. They belonged to the lord and lady of the Yun family—alongside them was their second daughter, Yun Yingying.

“Mengmeng, let me check if you’re injured,” the wife of Lord Yun, Hao Bilian, said loudly. The commotion caught the attention of numerous bystanders.

Yun Mengmeng played her part effortlessly—she was sobbing dramatically as a crowd gathered.

Mu Yunzhan’s eyebrows knitted together. He had softened the blow to avoid any further reprisal but the situation backfired unexpectedly.

“Brother Mu… Don’t you know Bai Ye, my cousin… S-she’s engaged… You can’t… The both of you…” Yun Mengmeng stuttered as she spoke, taking the opportunity to add fuel to the fire.

Her words carried an accusatory tone, as if Mu Yunzhan was fooling around with her married cousin. Moreover, the tear tracks down Yun Mengmeng’s face and the preceding violence implied Mu Yunzhan had unfinished business with her as well.

At that point, Bai Ye realized Yun Mengmeng was not dumb. She underestimated Yun Mengmeng’s skill for the dramatics.

Yun Mengmeng was an amusing character, Bai Ye could appreciate that. However, when did she become her cousin?

“Enough! Lord Yun, what are your intentions?” Frustrated, Mu Yunzhan ignored the spectacle before him and turned to Yun Suqian.

Before Yun Suqian could speak, a clear voice rang out beyond the Yun family crowd. “Brother Mu, it’s been a while.”

The voice came from a man dressed in a light green robe. The Yun family shuffled around to let the charming man pass. Qing Xuantian walked through the parted crowd, catching the eyes of ladies all around. He was as Bai Ye remembered, a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

“Brother Qing?” Mu Yunzhan was surprised to see Qing Xuantian.

“Here I am. We last saw each other in Imperial City. My invitation for Brother Mu to visit Qingyun is always open, yet official business keeps you busy. Now that official business has brought you here, I’m delighted to see Little Ye keeping you company,” Qing Xuantian said with a faint smile on his lips.

Qing Xuantian shifted his gaze to Bai Ye and said affectionately, “Little Ye, why have you come to Tong City? And without informing either me or your uncle…”

Then, he gave Mu Yunzhan a contrived explanation, “My apologies, Brother Mu, I should explain, Little Ye is my fiancée. We had a minor disagreement and…”

A dark expression crossed Mu Yunzhan’s face. He did not like the implication but before he could open his mouth…

Hao Bilian—who was cradling Yun Mengmeng—turned to Bai Ye and began her lecture. “Little Ye, I don’t mean ill but look at the mess you’ve made.

“Your grandfather had just passed away and you’re out here running amok? Learning unknown techniques and fooling around with eligible bachelors? You’re engaged to Qing Xuantian! You unruly…”
